As I pointed out in my last blog post, the main way in which I earn my livelihood is through live music performances. From time to time, I am invited to perform at live concerts, and that is the main way in which I get to earn money. Now one of the major challenges I face while preparing for the live musical concerts is that of getting musicians to back me up. I don’t maintain a full-time band to back me up during the live performances. This means that whenever I am given an invitation to perform at a live concert, I have to get ‘temporary’ musicians to back me up.
Thankfully, there are lots of talented instrumentalists, vocalists and even dancers in the city where I live. Many of these are folks who are often very willing to avail their services to me, whenever I have live performances. To make the deal even more attractive, I don’t invite the backup musicians personally. On the contrary, I prefer to do so through my company. You see, a few years ago, I went to the Sunbiz.org website, and incorporated a musical company. This decision, to register a company at Sunbiz has turned out to be a very good move. This is because if I was inviting the artists (to back me up during the live performances) in my personal capacity, they would probably drag their feet. But when they get the invitation from a company, in an official letterhead, they tend to respond very positively.
I therefore don’t have difficulties getting musicians to back me up during my live performances. The area where I sometimes have difficulties is that of getting the musicians to work well as a team: given the fact that I have to engage new artists whenever I have an upcoming performance. But to overcome this challenge, I normally schedule several practice sessions, and by the time the date of the live concert comes, the backup artists tend to be quite well prepared.
